Gentle Reminder Letter: Record Store Day In The Fort

Dearest Fort Worthians,

We are writing you today as to remind all thee great citizens of our mighty metropolis(?) that there will be much party to be had this Saturday, April 22nd.

Mucho mucho party.  

Ya see, this Saturday is Record Store Day. According to the official Record Store Day website, 2017 marks the 10yr anniversary of Record Store Day.

In fact, RSD has grown so much since its inception, there are now stores from every continent participating (except Antarctica, 'cause penguins).

Enough with the history lesson, let's move on to the party(ies).

All of Saturday's events are free to attend and all feature insanely stacked lineups. 

Besides that, all these events take place during the day which means they provide one and all with a legitimate excuse to day drink!

Last but not least, it is imperative we citizens support our local record stores. They are the lifeblood of our scene. If anything, this Saturday represents a great opportunity to celebrate our record stores and their contribution to our community.

We're pretty set in our ways for the I Like This Song series. We never say much about the music itself besides, "I like this song."

However, in this series, we DO rather enjoy fleshing out album concepts; song and album titles, album visuals, etc., pretty much everything but the music itself.

On BP's Soundcloud page he notes that he "wrote this (album) about the end of my closest friendship."

Thought to myself, "I like where this is going." 

Then I noted the album title, "Hmm, like it again."

Then this song title stood out in an album's worth of amazing song titles.

Lastly, I finally listened to the song and the deal was sealed! 

I recommend giving the whole album a listen but given we had to choose one, I felt "My Bestie Done Left Me" set the tone for the record.  

I also thought the snail pic chosen as the album cover art meshed well with the record's theme. I mean who hasn't had a friendship that felt like it plodded along, leaving a trail of slime behind in its wake??

Now then, get me a bottle and put me on a beach ... we'll provide the message ...

1. Dogs or Cats? Why?

AP: I grew up with cats, but now, since I got my first and current dog Boobie, I'm a dog man.

2. Aliens. Do they exist?

AP: Yes. There's too much space and too much stuff in the universe to be just us all alone...it's simple math.

3. Drug of choice? (None is not an option btw)

AP: Marijuana...and food.

4. Brown or white gravy? (Neither is not an option btw)

AP: Depends on where I'm at or who's cookin' and what it's being poured on. But gun to my head? Brown.

5. Favorite weapon of mass destruction?

AP: Ohio-class submarine.

6. Favorite marsupial?

AP: Tasmanian Devil.

7. Favorite Superhero?

AP: Peter from Starbass.

Show Poster of the Week - The Future: An Exhibition in Art, Sound, & Movement at Shipping & Receiving

Once a week FWN features a show poster from the Fort.

This week we are happy to present Raef Payne's vision of a poster for this weekend's epic New Year's Eve event - The Future - taking place Saturday at Shipping & Receiving. 

ATN Productions has curated quite the slate of musicians and visual artists but Payne brings it with a surrealistic radiance of a design to match.

Prince Rama and Ronnie Heart and Wizardvizion! Oh my! Starbass Laboratories, Jason Faries (Neon Indian), Squanto, Frida Monet and Raef himself round up this galactic musical lineup. 

Many among us believe Aliens and their superior technology aided in constructing the ancient pyramids of Egypt around 2500 BCE. Whether intended or not, in Payne's design, I discern an Alien reconnaissance ship's spectral tractor beam.

The purple and blue-hued tractor beam emits upon an ancient pyramid producing a confluence of 'the sacred' and modernity, one similar to that of what we noted in our inaugural Show Poster of the Week by Jeffrey Chase.       

Upon reading the event's prospectus, this juxtaposition of human antiquity and future technologies seems to be what The Future exhibition is all about. Through this lens it's safe to state Payne did a masterful design job aligning with the aura of the event, achieving seamless synchronicity.

By the gods, I swear, I'm currently slacking at work as to research legal loopholes so I can formally marry this design ... I love it so.
